  • You must not be traveling with dependent family members.
  • Hold a valid Argentine passport.

  • Have no criminal record.

This visa allows you to

  • Enter Portugal and remain in the country legally for 12 months, starting from the date of entry.
  • It is a multiple-entry visa, so you may leave and re-enter the country as many times as you wish.
  • You may take one or more training or professional development courses, with a total duration of up to 6 months.
  • You may work for up to 6 months of the total 12-month period.

100 visas will be issued per year.

Once you apply for the working holiday visa, the Portuguese embassy must make a decision within 90 days. And once you receive your working holiday visa (in your passport), you have 90 days to travel to Portugal.

How much does the visa cost?

The visa costs ARS 4,925 and is paid on the day of the interview. This cost may vary from month to month as determined by the “Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros” in Lisbon.

Payment is made via money order addressed to the Consular Section of Portugal in Buenos Aires and is due once all your documentation has been reviewed

How to Apply

1 – Prepare all the necessary documents to submit your application for the Working Holiday program at the Portuguese Embassy.

A valid Argentine passport, the original and photocopies. Regarding the photocopies, they must include all used pages; it does not specify whether they must be in color or black and white, so it is up to you to choose whichever format you prefer. The important thing to note here is that your passport must remain valid for at least three months after the visa’s expiration date.

Visa application form: On the day of the interview, you will be given a form to fill out on the spot. The embassy provides it, so you don’t need to look for it online or request it by email.

Photographs: Two identical, recent passport photos in good condition. They must be 4×4 cm in size, with a white or light-colored background. Hair must be tucked behind the ears so the face is clearly visible; if you have facial piercings, they must be removed.

Airfare: You must present a return ticket to Argentina or have sufficient funds to purchase one.

Proof of Funds: Proof of reasonably sufficient funds to support yourself during the initial period of your stay. To demonstrate funds, you may provide a bank statement, fixed-term deposits, or your parents’ pay stubs along with a letter stating that they will cover your expenses.

Proof of accommodation: You can make a reservation for a hotel, hostel, or apartment; alternatively, a resident of Portugal can send you a Letter of Invitation committing to host you starting from your arrival date. this letter must be in Portuguese, include an address and the duration of the stay, and must be hand-signed. Regarding hostel reservations, they must be made at least 10–15 days in advance; reservations for shorter periods will not be accepted.

You must present medical and accident insurance (Travel Insurance) covering the entire stay with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, including medical repatriation and repatriation of remains.

Certificate of Criminal Record, issued within the last 90 days by the National Registry of Recidivism and Criminal Statistics, legalized with the Hague Apostille, and translated into Portuguese by a certified translator, with the translation legalized by the corresponding Translators’ Association. For your reference, you must obtain the Hague Apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship; it costs ARS 90, and if you complete the process in the morning, you will receive it the same day. As for translations, prices vary widely, but the cheapest you can find is around ARS 500. A translation certified by the Association costs ARS 320 if you need it the same day or ARS 290 if you pick it up the next day.

For the Certificate of Tertiary/University Studies recognized by the Argentine government, you must submit a copy certified by the educational institution or by a notary public. Many people submit their academic transcript, already signed by, for example, the academic secretary, and that is sufficient as certification. Always make sure it is signed by an authorized official.

Portuguese Criminal Record Certificate: This certificate is issued by the Portuguese Embassy, which verifies whether or not you have a criminal record in Portugal. Since most of you have likely never traveled to Portugal, this should not be a problem. On the day of your interview, you will be given this certificate to fill out on the spot.
