The Best Adventures to Experience in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai offers the perfect trio for a dream vacation: nature, culture, and adventure.

It is well known as a thriving hub for digital nomads visiting Asia.

This tranquil city in northern Thailand offers a fascinating mix of temples, bustling night markets, and modern, stylish cafes.

Surrounded by lush rainforest and mountains, Chiang Mai offers access to excellent outdoor adventures.

Here are the ones we think are the best.

Hiking and trekking in the lush jungle.

Doi Inthanon National Park is the highest point in Thailand. It’s also home to some of the most impressive waterfalls, such as Wachirathan, Sirithan, and Mae Ya. There are day hikes, but there are also two- and three-day excursions. The tree-covered mountains are almost always shrouded in mist, offering stunning photo opportunities.

Two important things to keep in mind: the trail is closed during the rainy season, from June to October.

Additionally, hiring a local guide is mandatory; it costs 200 Thai baht, or just over $6.

Visit the Sticky Waterfalls

Crystal-clear water flows rapidly over the limestone surface of Bua Tong Falls.

It’s also a popular picnic spot for locals. You can go here on your own or opt for a tour with a local expert through TakeMeTour.

This organization provides community-based travel experiences that help support local families.

Rafting on the Mae Tang River

25 km from the old town lies the Mae Tang River, offering opportunities for kayaking and whitewater rafting excursions.

Exploring the Mae Hong Son Loop by motorcycle.

Sunsets between mountains, tribal markets in small villages, centuries-old temples, fairy-tale cafes, rice paddies, and roads—lots of roads. This is the Mae Hong Son Loop.

It’s a nearly 700-km loop along a beautiful but winding road, surrounded by mountains, that begins and ends in the city of Chiang Mai. Ideal for exploring by motorcycle.

The Mae Hong Son Loop is one of the most popular motorcycle routes in Southeast Asia.

Seeing Elephants in Chiang Mai

Thailand is one of the best countries to see wild elephants. However, make sure not to participate in any unethical activities, such as elephant riding. (Elephants forced to carry people are often mistreated, and their bodies weren’t designed to bear that weight on their backs.)

There are some reputable elephant sanctuaries in Thailand.

If you’re staying longer, consider volunteering at Burn and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary. It’s a retirement home for old and injured elephants that were forced to work in captivity. The sanctuary offers the chance to walk alongside these gentle giants and feed them.

Elephant Pride Sanctuary is a small home for a family of five elephants that offers natural encounters deep in the Chiang Mai jungle. You can enjoy a mud bath with the elephants and join them in the flowing river as they spray you with cool water. The guide is knowledgeable and will tell you about the animals’ behavior and physical characteristics.
