El Chaltén is a town in the western part of the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. It is located in the southern Andes, in the extreme southwest of Argentine Patagonia, at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy—or Chaltén—and on the banks of the Río de las Vueltas.
It is the youngest town in the country, and proof of this is that there is no cemetery in El Chaltén.
It has just over 1,627 permanent residents, and the number of tourists has risen from 14,000 in 2000 to 60,000 in the last season.
