What to Do in Mallorca in 5 Days

Are you thinking about taking a trip to Mallorca? Here are 15 things to do in Mallorca so you can enjoy everything the island has to offer.

Here’s an important tip: if you can rent a car, don’t hesitate—it’s the best way to reach most of the coves and magical little spots the island has to offer, especially if you’re only staying a few days and want to make the most of everything Mallorca has to offer.

Mallorca is a beautiful island; its small villages still retain the charm of fishing, fishing nets, markets, and the local women, with their stone houses and narrow alleys, and their cheeses and cured meats.

It has the charm of its food and its small coves, of the turquoise hues in some of its waters. It has a sea of jellyfish along its shores and small, weathered wooden structures for storing fishing boats; it smells of the sea, of fresh fish, of clean air. Mallorca has charm.

Mallorca smells like an island, smells like the sea, but you can’t miss visiting Palma de Mallorca, its capital. Ideally, you should spend a whole day exploring it at a leisurely pace. For that, you don’t need a car—you can walk or take public transportation almost everywhere, saving yourself a day’s rental fee.

Another option is to rent a bike to go at your own pace and make the most of the city. You can also sign up for a free 2-hour tour, explore the city on a tourist bus, or, if you prefer to go at your own pace and visit the city according to your own interests, book a private tour of Palma de Mallorca—though simply wandering through its streets is worth the trip.

The Cathedral

Whether you like religious buildings or not, the Cathedral of Santa María in Palma de Mallorca is worth a visit. It is commonly known as La Seu. If you decide to go inside, be sure to admire its rose window, the largest Gothic-style rose window in Europe. You can explore it on your own or, if you enjoy learning about the history of the places you visit, book a guided tour of Palma’s Cathedral.

Plus, in the surrounding area, you can soak up the street life, the small street stalls, the musicians setting the mood, the horse-drawn carriages, and the many outdoor cafes where you can grab a drink and take a break during your visit.

The Old Town

Another thing to do in Mallorca is take a stroll through its historic center, where you’ll discover many charming streets, quaint little shops with an old-world feel (and many others filled with souvenirs). The windows are decorated with flowers that complement the warm tones of the walls of the little houses lining the streets, so take a walk, grab a drink, and enjoy the show.

Bellver Castle

Enjoy a visit to the imposing Bellver Castle, one of the few in Europe with a circular layout. In addition to the building itself, the views from the area are well worth it, as you’ll be able to enjoy some breathtaking panoramic vistas.

The Royal Palace of La Almudiana

You’ve probably heard of it, as it’s one of the Crown’s summer residences. It’s a fortress that was originally Muslim but where you can also see the Roman influences that came later.

Also, if you have time, be sure to visit the S’Hort del Rei Gardens, the Jewish quarter of Call, and the fishing district of Es Jonquet.

TAKE A ROAD TRIP TO VISIT THE SMALL TOWNS

One of Mallorca’s greatest surprises is its small villages.

The village of Valldemossa

One destination you can’t miss is Valldemossa, one of the most charming villages you’ll find across the island. This small, picturesque village is located in the north of the island, in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, and retains the charm of its traditions.

You can visit it on your own by car, or you can book a tour to Valldemossa to follow in the footsteps of Frédéric Chopin by visiting the Cartuja de Valldemossa, where he stayed. Without a doubt, a village steeped in history and charm.

The village of Santanyí

ENJOY THE COVES OF MALLORCA

Cala des Moro

Cala des Moro is one of the most famous. It is a beautiful natural pool with clear turquoise waters and white sand.

Cala Llombard

Beautiful, but overrun with jellyfish. The cove is surrounded by a pine forest and framed by rocky cliffs. On the slopes leading down to the shore, you can see a few small houses belonging to the lucky few, most of whom are probably German. Because, yes, Mallorca is an island taken over by all those Germans who decide to make it their vacation destination or even their retirement spot, to the point where it’s easy to find information in English or hear more German than Spanish or Mallorcan spoken around you.

Cala Figuera

A small village with a cove where you can see boats moored, waiting for their next outing, the fresh fish just brought in, or fishermen mending their nets for the next catch. It’s fascinating to watch the men sitting on the ground with their toolboxes.

Cala de Pi

Another of Mallorca’s most famous coves is Cala de Pi, a small cove surrounded by cliffs that, like Cala des Moros, takes your breath away with the turquoise color of its waters. It’s in the south of the island and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

The truth is that Mallorca is full of small coves, each a wonderful gift. Some are more accessible, while others lie hidden behind hills that make you sweat, leaving you frustrated as you wonder if you’re in the right place. So if you want to explore more, other coves you can visit include Cala Mesquida, Cala Varques, Coll Baix Beach, Sa Canova Beach, Cala del Mago, or Es Trenc Beach.

And if you’re left wanting more and want to dive into the island’s turquoise waters no matter the time of year, another thing you can do in Mallorca to enjoy a trip that combines sports and relaxation, along with new experiences, is to take a beginner’s diving course where you can enjoy the underwater flora and fauna that inhabits the island’s coastline.

HIKING AND CAVE TOURS

Mallorca isn’t just about coves and cities; it also offers plenty of options for hiking enthusiasts and even for those who enjoy visiting some of the island’s most famous caves. From Natural Parks where you can enjoy the flora and fauna to breathtaking enclaves.

S’Albufera Natural Park in Mallorca

If you want to discover the local flora and fauna, another great thing to do in Mallorca is to visit the S’Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park, where you’ll also enjoy spectacular views.

Mondragó Natural Park

Mallorca isn’t very big, but it’s so diverse and well-preserved that you can also enjoy the Mondragó Natural Park, in the southeast of the island, where, in addition to hiking trails, you can enjoy beautiful coves.

Cabrera National Park

Another park to visit in Mallorca is the Cabrera National Park, a protected natural area where you can spot wildlife if you’re patient and bring binoculars.

The Caves of Drach

They are located in Porto Cristo and house one of the largest underground lakes in the world, Lake Martel, which you can cross by boat. You can visit them every day of the year except December 25 and January 25 for about €15. If you want more info, you can visit their website, and if you don’t want to visit on your own, you can book a tour to the Caves of Drach where, in addition to exploring the caves and crossing Lake Martel by boat, you’ll be shown the coastal town of Porto Cristo and learn how Mallorcan pearls are made.

There’s also a half-day tour to the Caves of Drach where you’ll also enjoy a classical music concert inside the caves.
