Many young people from all over the world travel the globe while working to help pay for part of their trip, thanks to the Working Holiday Visa. Other popular ways to travel on a budget include Wwoofing, working on cruise ships or in hotels, and volunteering in exchange for room and board.
In this post, we’ll share the best options for working while traveling.
Working Holiday Visa
This is an agreement between various countries that allows their citizens to temporarily settle in another country with a temporary work permit. It’s a way to get to know a country while working there.
The requirements for working in Australia, Canada, or New Zealand are similar: you must be between 18 and 30 years old, not bring children with you, have health insurance covering your stay, have a round-trip ticket or prove you have the money to buy the return ticket, and demonstrate that you have a certain amount of money in your bank account.
In our work visas section, you’ll find details on each one.

Wwoofing: working on organic farms around the world
WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, which means opportunities to work on organic farms around the world. WWOOFing is a way to travel while working, even in countries where foreigners are not allowed to work without a permit. It involves working part-time in exchange for room and board, a kind of labor exchange agreed upon between the traveler and the organic farm. The arrangement is flexible, and you can work for two days, two weeks, or two months, working on a farm while getting to know the country. There are all kinds of farms and a wide variety of jobs, from picking apples to raising butterflies or helping care for horses. There are farms for vegetarians, for vegans, tropical flower farms...
To participate in Wwoofing, you must register and pay a small fee to access the list of all farms and the types of work they offer. The system provides a reference number that the farms you contact for work will ask for.
This program is used in New Zealand and Australia, but also in European countries like Germany. You can find out more on their official website.
Volunteer work
This involves volunteering at hotels, farms, and especially hostels in exchange for lodging. You typically work a few hours in exchange for lodging, and sometimes also receive meals and a little pocket money. You usually have to work a few hours in exchange for accommodation, and sometimes also for meals and a little pocket money. It’s common to work between two and six hours a day in exchange for free accommodation, and this allows you to accumulate hours so you can later enjoy a few days off. It usually doesn’t require a minimum number of days.
The problem is that there is high demand. The best way to move around and travel while working is to join one of the volunteer work social networks like HelpX, which cover the whole world. There’s usually a small fee to join the network, and there are hostels all over the world, but especially in Australia and New Zealand.
(Free) Vacations at Sea
There are a number of websites that help you find temporary work on cruise ships (waitstaff, tour guides, interpreters, lecturers, entertainers, etc.). This way, you can travel the world on ships that would otherwise cost a fortune to travel on, and earn some money along the way. The workdays aren’t usually too long, and there’s always free time to enjoy yourself.
