Indonesia is one of those destinations you always want to return to. This post is for everyone who wants to experience the best of Indonesia.
- Discover that, no matter how touristy it may be, Bali, the Island of the Gods, is one of the most incredible places in the world. Maybe it’s the temples, maybe it’s the religion—unique in the world—maybe it’s the extraordinary people… Bali has something special that captivates travelers.
- Fall in love with the turquoise blue waters of the Gili Islands. After the terrible earthquake that struck them in August 2018, they are slowly returning to the paradise they once were. If you’re planning a trip to Bali lasting more than a week, it’s worth spending a few days here.
- Visit Nusa Penida (and specifically Kelingking Beach), one of the trendiest destinations—but even setting that aside, it’s absolutely stunning. It’s very close to Bali, so it’s easy to get there.
- On the island of Java, you can’t miss a trip to Mount Bromo, undoubtedly one of the major highlights of a trip to Indonesia. Just make sure to do your research before deciding which tour to take!
- To continue exploring Indonesia from above, Mount Ijen is another volcano on Java that you can visit. It’s quite a spectacle thanks to its blue fire (burning sulfur), though there are some unsavory aspects surrounding it—like seeing workers risking their lives for a few rupees or the lack of safety measures—that might make you reconsider the visit. But without a doubt, climbing Mount Ijen is something that has to be on the list of the best things to do in Indonesia.

- Indonesia is a great destination for surf lovers (both beginners and experts). Canggu is a true paradise for surfers.
- The island of Flores is another very interesting stop, especially to visit the traditional villages of Bajawa on Mount Kelimutu and enjoy one of Indonesia’s least touristy islands (among the touristy ones, of course).
- Tana Toraja is located on the fascinating island of Sulawesi, and the Toraja people are famous for their funeral rites.
- Yogyakarta is the cultural capital of Indonesia and the center of batik, where you can spend a couple of quiet days strolling through the town and succumbing to the charms of Indonesian cuisine. But nearby there are also two temples that could grace the cover of any National Geographic magazine: Borobudur (the world’s largest Buddhist temple) and Prambanan (a Hindu temple that is every bit as spectacular as those at Angkor). If you’re short on time, a good idea is to take a tour that takes you to see both
- The best place to see orangutans in the wild is on the island of Sumatra, in the Bukit Lawang area. The best way to fully enjoy the experience is to go on a multi-day trek through the jungle (2 or 3 days).
- The cruise through Komodo National Park is usually a two-day/one-night trip, and you’ll need to travel to Labuan Bajo, where the boats depart.
- A hike to the viewpoint on Padar Island. It’s one of the most breathtaking photos you’ll be able to take in Indonesia.
- Pulau Weh, a great spot for diving, but also for relaxing on its beaches. It is located north of the island of Sumatra.
- An ideal destination for diving is the Raja Ampat archipelago—a paradise. It is one of the areas with the greatest marine biodiversity in the world.
- Sail to the Moluccas, the Spice Islands.
